Arterial Oxygen Content Calculator

Calculates CaO₂ from hemoglobin, arterial saturation, and PaO₂.

Inputs

Color mode links each input to the matching equation term and solving arithmetic.

Equation and Work

Equation:
Solving steps:
Hb-bound O₂
mL/dL
Dissolved O₂
mL/dL
CaO₂
mL/dL
Normal/reference: CaO₂ normal range listed in the reference is 16–20 vol% / mL/dL.

Clinical Significance

Arterial oxygen content estimates oxygen carried in arterial blood. The 1.34 constant is the approximate mL of O₂ carried by 1 g of fully saturated hemoglobin, and 0.003 is the dissolved oxygen solubility coefficient in plasma.

CaO₂ is used in oxygen delivery, Fick cardiac output, and shunt calculations.

Saturation must be entered as a percent; the calculator converts it to a decimal for the equation.
