Clinical Significance

Bicarbonate correction estimates the sodium bicarbonate needed for severe base deficit. The denominator 4 represents the extracellular-water distribution approximation used in this correction.

The calculation is used when sodium bicarbonate is clinically indicated for severe metabolic acidosis; many protocols start with one-half of the calculated amount.
