Clinical Significance

Oxygen consumption estimates oxygen used per minute from cardiac output and arterial–mixed venous oxygen content difference. The factor 10 converts oxygen content in vol% (mL/dL) into mL/L before multiplying by cardiac output in L/min.

VO₂ and VO₂ index help quantify systemic oxygen utilization and index it to body size.

The result depends on accurate oxygen content and cardiac output inputs. The ×10 factor converts mL/dL content difference to mL/L.
