Clinical Significance

Predicted body weight estimates lung-protective ventilator weight from sex and height. The constants 50, 45.5, 2.3, and 60 are the ARDSNet-style inch-based constants for the selected sex.

PBW is commonly used for mL/kg ventilator settings because lung size relates more closely to height than actual body weight.

PBW is separate from Hamwi-style IBW and should not be treated as the same equation.
